Succeeding in the City Report Release

We ask that you join us on Monday, September 30th for the release of “Succeeding in the City: A Report from the New York City Black and Latino Male High School Achievement Study”. This is the nation’s most comprehensive study of factors that lead to high school success and college readiness among Black and Latino men from your school. Chancellor Walcott will be present as well as University of Pennsylvania Professor Shaun R. Harper. We will also hear a message from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Where: The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (515 Malcolm X Boulevard and 135th Street)

When: Monday, September 30th

Time: 4:00 – 7:00 PM

Audience: Up to 5 members per school; Principal, ESI Point Person, Key Stakeholders and Young Men who were interviewed for the study

ESI Budget/Operations Training Webinar

On September 4th, the ESI Team hosted a budget training to help deepen your understanding of the finance and contracting policies and procedures associated with administering the ESI grant. A clear understanding of these policies and procedures will lead to expedient transactions throughout the year and will allow programming to run smoothly. Based on feedback from that training, a live webinar will be held Friday, September 27th from 1:00 – 2:00. We encourage APOs, Business Managers, Purchasing Secretaries and/or any other school-based staff members charged with the oversight of the ESI budget to tune in and participate in this webinar. Opportunities

YMI My Voice, Our City Competition

Recently, ten finalists were announced in the My Voice, Our City competition, which seeks to empower Black and Latino young men, local organizations, and community leaders to submit program ideas that would brighten NYC. We need help from you and your students to decide the three best innovative ideas. Click here to learn more about the ideas and to cast your vote.

NACAC National College Fairs

Two NACAC National College Fairs will be held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. The Performing and Visual Arts College Fair will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. The National College Fair will be held on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Register for College Board PSAT/NMSQT Rollout Webinar

Network and school staff are invited to attend an interactive webinar covering access to tools for PSAT/NMSQT preparation and administration. Additionally, attendees will receive strategies for engaging students, parents, and school communities in understanding the value of the PSAT/NMSQT. The webinar will take place on September 27 from 1:00–2:00 p.m. Click here to register. Participants will receive an email from Eventbrite with a link to the webinar.

Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology

School Type: Small High School

Location: Bushwick, Brooklyn

Principal: Michael Prayor

Total student enrollment: 460 

Percent Latino/Latina: 25%

Percent Black: 73%

Strategies that work: During the summer, Brooklyn HS for Law and Technology was one of 23 ESI schools that received an ESI Summer Bridge mini-grant to host a bridge program for incoming freshmen. During the 5 week program, 36 students (22 young men and 14 young ladies) took classes taught by professors at Brooklyn College, visited Hofstra University, and participated in teambuilding activities including a trip to NJ to see the New York Liberty women’s basketball team play. To bolster and support the students’ academic skills, the program was designed to strengthen their readiness in the areas of math literacy, science literacy and technology. In addition, there was an infusion of discussions around college and career readiness and social emotional awareness. The bridge program concluded with a “BK Law and Tech’s ESI Summer Robotics Launch Party” where the students celebrated with their peers, parents, school staff and the central ESI Team. It was also an opportunity for them to showcase the work that they had done building and programs robots and learning about their own cultural identity and historical background.

 

  

Operations Corner

This feature is intended to give you technical or operational information from the budget and operations members of our ESI Team.

Extension: Scopes of Work Plans Due September 27: The deadline for submitting Scopes of Work Plans has been extended to September 27. Please submit your school’s Scopes of Work document to Charisse Taylor if your school has not already done so. Copies of the documents are available here. Shout Outs

Shout out to the staff at the High School for Law and Public Service for kicking off the new year with four weeks of Culturally Responsive Education Training (CRE) with Michelle Knight!

Staff are engaging in a dialogue around what it is to build a culturally responsive, college-going culture at their school.
