News and Updates

Martin and Music

Martin & Music is a ground-breaking stage production–spoken word and speeches interwoven with music and storytelling. Gerald Rivers, the voice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., sets ablaze the words, authentic tone, and life of one of the world’s greatest Civil Rights leaders and orators. Broadway performer and celebrated recording artist, Charles Holt, serves as narrator and vocalist in the magical trio of message, music, and storytelling. Audiences around the country have been moved by the transformational experience of the production. You can see a short clip of one of their compelling and moving performances here.

As we look to create opportunities for our young men in the ESI community to come together throughout the school year, we are happy to announce that the first opportunity will be on Tuesday, December 3rd at the Schomburg Center. There will be two performances (10:00 – 11:30 and 12:30 – 2:00) of “Martin and Music.” Please follow the link below to register for this exciting event. Each school is invited to send up to 50 students from their school to attend. We hope to see a cohort of your young men at one of the performances on December 3rd.

Promising Practices: Here at Bronx Leadership Academy II, an important part of creating a college-going culture for students is the College Seminar. Students take the seminar every year and the outcomes vary in preparation for their transition to higher education after their senior year of high school. For freshmen and sophomores it really helps them understand the importance of taking each year of their high school education seriously. We message the importance of building the skills needed to succeed in college, not just be accepted. That skill building starts in their freshmen year of college seminar.

Being college ready is part of the BLA II “DNA.” And beyond the skill-building for students, college seminar also helps our parents with the process that comes with having a college-bound child.

For more information about ESI related activities at Bronx Leadership Academy II High School, please contact their ESI point person, Daniel Gannon, at DGannon@bla2hs.org.

Shout Outs

Shout out to the staff at the staff and students at East Bronx Academy for the Future!

Last week, ninth and tenth grade young men from East Bronx Academy visited two colleges. Ninth grade students visited Iona College and 10th grade students visited Manhattanville College. Accompanied by their ESI Team chaperons, East Bronx Academy (EBA) students toured the respective campuses, met college students, and learned about the programs offered at those institutions. Shout out to EBA for creating such a rewarding experience with their students!

Do you have a strategy, teacher, or program at your school that you wish to highlight? If so, send an email to rhaynes6@schools.nyc.gov for inclusion in our ESI Weekly Update.
