ESI Update

Week of March 24

Principals and ESI Team Members,

We continue to see exciting strategies being implemented across ESI schools. Last week Urban Assembly for Careers in Sports and Science Genius were in the news. (Click here to see the news video on Urban Assembly and Science Genius.) Science Genius is an exciting program that infuses hip hop, which is part of the culture of many of our ESI young men, into science classes. This year, ESI partnered with the creators behind the program, Dr. Chris Emdin, Professor at Teachers College, and GZA from the Wu-Tang Clan. Science Genius is the kind of innovative strategy that ESI is looking to uplift in our schools. A total of 12 ESI schools signed up to take part. This week a number of participating schools had an opportunity to bring students to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum where they heard about the history of the aircraft carrier. (See Shout Outs below.) They also gathered in the auditorium of the Intrepid to learn more about the Science Genius program. We encourage school leaders to continue thinking about the innovative strategies we want perpetuated in our schools next year and beyond.

School Spotlight

*This feature is intended to give you insight into what is happening in other ESI schools. We hope you enjoy your “visit”!

High School for Law and Public Service

Location: Washington Heights, New York

Principal: Nicholas Politis

Total student enrollment: 688

Percent Latino/Latina: 84%

Percent Black: 13%

Promising Practices:

This school year, the High School for Law and Public Service (HSLPS) located in Washington Heights, created a common period where each grade level Professional Learning Community (PLC) meets at the same time, twice a week, during the school day. The 9th grade PLC, led by Assistant Principal and ESI Liaison, Alexandra Brown, decided to include students once per week during their meeting.

Once per week, ninth grade students are invited to come and work with their peers and their teachers on various service learning projects. Upperclassmen who served as mentors were also invited to attend these sessions. Upperclassmen mentors were then paired with a Freshman student and introduced to the service learning project.

The first project that they worked on was called Open the Door to College. The students, freshman and mentor, were assigned a college or university to research and collect data and artifacts to create a display. With support from the 9th grade teachers, the students would then make a colorful and creative display on classroom doors depicting the essence of the college/university that they had learned about. A contest to choose the most creative and informative college door took place and prizes were won.

At the end of the day, there were no winners or losers: everyone won. The young people learned more about colleges and university, they participated in a fun research project, the students bonded with each other and teachers bonded with their students. A true win-win-win situation.

To learn more about this promising practice and other ESI related activities at HSLPS, feel free to contact Alexandra Brown at abrown@hslps.net

Shout-Out to the students and staff at El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice

Students from El Puente Academy took part in a school-wide, multi-disciplinary Integrated Arts Project (IAP) focused on the themes of legacy and cultural preservation, which evolved as a response to students’ history lessons on European imperialism.

El Puente students’ ultimate exploration of these issues resulted in their recreating the symbols of imperialism and excess–and their work is on display at El Museo del Barrio. The collection of students’ work is curated as the exhibit, Portraits of Power.

To learn more about the project and viewing times for the exhibit, visit El Museo del Barrio’s website here!

Also:

Shout-Out to Explorations Academy High School, High School for Law and Public Service, Urban Assembly in Careers in Sports and Queens Preparatory High School for being a part of the Science Genius kick-off on the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum!

The young people who attended learned about the history of the aircraft carrier. They then met in the auditorium to discuss the Science Genius program.
